MKIV Escort XR3i
A truly, truly stunning and remarkable early MKIV Ford Escort XR3i. Known to be the oldest surviving Halewood built example in existence, this un-repeatable car has covered just 31852 miles from new and has been completely cherished and pampered since day one by just two fastidious, enthusiast owners.
Un-restored cars are just so thin on the ground and the condition of this un-restored example is just breath taking. We are under no illusion that this car will only appeal to a Ford enthusiast or collector that holds the mind-set that only the best of the best will satisfy the need...
We have not just taken any old XR and put a ridiculous asking price on it. Within the last six months or so, one or two MKIV XR3is of exceptional calibre have come to the market and reached and exceeded the asking price of this example. It is only the cars of exceptional quality that will achieve this sort of figure and we truly feel that this example will not disappoint! It represents a very unique and quite possibly un-repeatable opportunity...
Ordered from Perrys Ford of Middlesex on the 26th February 1986 by a Mr M Powell, the original order form is present within the history file. It was a car that the original owner had longed to own and always promised himself. This being the case, he wanted the car to be to his exacting specification and it seems that no 'factory option' box was left un-ticked. The car was ordered in the cost option of Black paint and the following specification was added...
- ECU2 Radio Cassette
- Tilt/Sliding Sunroof
- Rear Seat Belts
- Driving Lamps
- Electric Front Windows
- Alloy Wheels
- Central Locking
- Graphic Equilizer
- Fuel Computer
In addition to the above, the following items were added and fitted as dealer fitted accessories...
- Front Fog Lights
- 4 Mudflaps
At this time Ford had decided to move the production of the XR3i from Germany to Halewood. This is one of the very first examples to roll off the production line at the Halewood plant and it is recognised by the XR Owners Club to be the oldest surviving example to have been built at the Halewood factory.
The original Perrys Invoice which is in the file confirms that the car was first registered on the 16th May 1986. This was the first and last time that the XR would be taxed for 12 months. The original owner took the decision from day one that the car would never be used during the winter months and as such, it was only ever taxed for six months during the summer...it remained tucked away and stored correctly in the family garage throughout the winter. Even during the summer, before the car went out on the road, the weather forecast was checked and if there was any chance of a downpour, the car remained locked away. It has never seen a UK winter out on the road and we believe that it only ever got caught in an unexpected shower...once!!
The car remained in the cherished and fastidious ownership of the original owner for the next 27 years. During this time the car was always serviced at the correct intervals and a hand written log is consistent with all the bills, receipts and invoices contained within the history folder. The only none original items that have been replaced are tyres, battery and the suspension bushes have been upgraded to superior items...other than that, the car still remains to this day with all the original components that it left the factory with.
Following nearly two years of discussions, the XR was eventually purchased by its second and final owner. Being a long standing member of the XR Owners Club and a bit of a guru on anything XR Escort related, only the very best, original example available would be good enough. Mr Powell was also satisfied that his beloved XR3i that he had pampered for 27 years had found the home that it deserved.
Over the last three years this truly beautiful car has been subjected to subtle improvements to make it better than new. The original components of the running gear have all remained and keep true to its originality. They have just been cleaned, powder coated and the nuts and bolts have been zinc plated...in other words, it has been detailed to very high standard. The results are simply outstanding!
As you would expect, all the factory fitted panels remain to this day and are all factory stamped. The whole car, apart from a small nearside front bumper corner is still coated in its original paint. The depth of shine is simply remarkable and it is very evident that this is not a car that has just received a recent polish to bring life to...it has been this highly polished since day one! A few very small and well covered stone chips are present on the edge of the bonnet and remain within keeping with an un-restored example. All the factory fitted glass remains with the correct Bronze tint of the very early cars. It is unmarked. The glass sunroof is perfect and free of the usual rusting within the glass. All the Red bumper inserts and side trim are as vibrant as when new. The XR3i decals are again perfect and unmarked. The original supplying dealer number plates which incorporate the Go Perrys logo are fitted front and rear and the original rear window sticker is in place and un-faded. These are not replicated items...they are original. The wheel arches are exceptional and un-touched and the underside of the car presents in a better than new condition...its just beautiful!
Internally, the Raven cloth interior is superb and shows very little sign of being used. The seat bolsters remain remarkably solid and it is evident that extreme care has been taken over the years not to slide in and out of the car over the bolsters. The cloth is free from the usual stretching. The deep pile carpet is unmarked as are all plastic trims. The dashboard is superb and free from any marks, scratches or cracking. The vinyl door cards have slightly lifted. The headlining is perfect, it is still tight and damage free. The overhead clock still remains bright with no pixel loss. The original, upgraded radio cassette is in perfect working order along with the graphic equilizer. All switchgear is fully functional and free from markings. The steering wheel and gear knob still retain their correct grain.
Remarkably, the correct date stamped alloy wheels remain untouched. They have never been re-furbished. The front offside has very slight marks, the others are perfect. The original un-used fifth alloy remains in the boot and still wears its un-used Pirelli P6 tyre. All tools are present and again un-used.
Out on the road, the car drives just as you would expect. It is still nice and tight with no untoward noises. It picks its feet up well and it is very easy to see just why these cars were the 'must have' choice of motoring throughout the 80s.
The history file is within keeping with a truly cherished car. As mentioned, the original order form and invoice are present. A hand written log of all works carried out throughout the years sits along all the bills and receipts. The old MOT certificates are present. The original Perrys hand book pack is home to all the correct operating guides and the original and stamped Ford service booklet. Two original keys are present, along with the plastic master key. The history file will leave you in no doubt of the cherished life that this car has had.
The debate will go on and on about re-stored cars versus original ones. We suppose it is each to their own opinion. To put this cars condition into perspective, lets just wind the clock back a good few years. If it was 1988 and you were in the market for an exceptional, two year old XR3i, you would be very hard pushed to find a better one...or one that was anything like it to be fair. Come back to 2016 and it will be nigh on impossible! We are confident that this car will match any un-restored cars that are out there and will even give the very, very best re-stored ones a run for their money! Consider the fact that it is such an early built car with the highest specification possible, had just two owners from new and is backed up by an incredible history file... this is why we feel that you will never replicate this opportunity to own the best of the best...
